Engina mendicaria, known as the bee snail, is a small marine gastropod with a black and yellow striped shell. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this snail not only adds an aesthetic touch to the aquarium, but it is also known for its nocturnal behavior and its ability to sneak into the narrowest crevices of the rocky decor.
Engina mendicaria is primarily active at night. It lives in the sand, on live rocks, or around the shaded areas of the decor. This small snail is not just an algae-eater: it is an opportunistic predator that can prey on very small worms or other weakened snails. It thus plays a complementary role in the food chain and biological cleaning of the aquarium.
The bee snail is quite robust, but requires gentle acclimatization through drip method. It does not like osmotic shocks. Avoid exposing it to an overly aggressive environment or too dynamic digging fish.
Engina mendicaria is compatible with most reef aquariums, provided it is not paired with very small or fragile snails, which it might attack. It is not recommended for tanks where fragile microfauna is important, as it could reduce it.
Its main role remains that of a substrate and small organic debris cleaner. It actively participates in maintaining the surface layer of the sand and limits dead zones.
With its distinctive silhouette and its role as a small cleaner predator, Engina mendicaria is an original and functional addition for reef aquarium enthusiasts looking to diversify their population of detritivores.
