Lithopoma sp – Robust Algae-Eating Snail for Reef Aquariums
Lithopoma sp is a marine snail with a massive body and a thick, spiral shell, often adorned with characteristic ridges and striations. This gastropod, native to subtropical and tropical reef areas, is highly valued in aquariums for its algae-grazing abilities.
An Ideal Snail Against Algae
Active both day and night, Lithopoma sp effectively consumes algae encrusted on live rocks, decorations, and the substrate. It thus helps to maintain a healthy biological balance and limit algae proliferation in marine aquariums.
Its diet, mainly consisting of algae, makes it harmless to corals, which makes it compatible with reef tanks. It's an excellent companion for other detritivores, provided it's not paired with too large a population of hermit crabs that might attack its shell.
Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum recommended volume: 100 liters
- Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Decor: sandy or mixed substrate, live rocks for grazing
- Compatibility: very good with peaceful fish, corals, and invertebrates
Acclimation Tips
Like all marine gastropods, slow drip acclimation is highly recommended. Be careful not to remove Lithopoma sp from the water with its operculum facing down, as an air bubble in the shell could cause its death. It is also advisable to place it gently on a stable surface.
