Alkalinity Professional Test 200T – Royal Nature Alkalinity Test

The Alkalinity Professional Test 200T by Royal Nature is a titration test designed to accurately measure the alkalinity of marine and reef aquarium water. Each kit allows for up to 200 tests.

Main Features

Test type: Alkalinity (DKH).

Number of tests: 200.

Method: Colorimetric titration.

Use: Marine and reef aquarium.

Testing Instructions

Using the 5 ml syringe, add 5 ml of aquarium water to the test vial.

With the 1 ml syringe, firmly attach the metal needle and draw the Alk-2 reagent up until the lower end of the black rubber on the syringe reaches exactly the 1.00 ml mark.

Before this step, ensure that the needle is free of any liquid and remains submerged throughout the operation to avoid air entry.

The presence of an air layer between the liquid and the black part of the syringe is normal and does not affect the result. This layer usually corresponds to 0.1 ml.

Add the Alk-2 reagent to the test vial drop by drop, shaking slightly after each drop.

After 2 to 3 drops, the solution turns blue. Continue adding the reagent until the color changes from blue to green, then from green to yellow.

The green phase indicates you are very close to the endpoint. The final result is obtained when the solution distinctly changes from green to yellow.

Avoid adding more reagent than necessary, as a too bright yellow color indicates surpassing the endpoint.

Note the position of the lower black part of the syringe, each division corresponds to 0.01 ml, then refer to the conversion chart to determine the alkalinity.

Useful Information

Before any use, ensure that the test vial is washed only with osmosis water and dried with a soft paper.

The alkalinity of natural seawater is about 7 DKH. It is recommended to maintain the aquarium's alkalinity between 7 and 10 DKH.

In case of low alkalinity, using suitable supplements allows maintaining the parameters within the recommended range.

Learn More About Alkalinity

Alkalinity is measured by titrating a sample with a strong acid until the buffering capacity of bicarbonate and carbonate ions is consumed. This point is reached at a pH of about 4.5.

At this stage, all bases responsible for alkalinity are neutralized.

Alkalinity is generally expressed in equivalent CaCO3 and can be converted into German degrees DKH, where 1 DKH corresponds to 17.848 mg/L.

Each test relies on a two-part chemical reaction. Unlike calcium and magnesium tests, the reagent is added to the seawater until the final color is obtained.

The calibration of the Royal Nature alkalinity test is based on precise analytical adjustments, made possible by small batch production, ensuring excellent reliability and repeatability of results.

For a reliable reading, perform the measurement under neutral lighting and accurately note the position of the syringe piston.
