Importance of Iodine and Iodide in Reefs

In natural seawater, iodine is mainly present in the form of iodide, the only form directly assimilable by reef organisms. Elemental iodine is toxic, even at low concentrations, while iodide is safe and biologically usable.

Precise monitoring is essential because iodide is quickly consumed by corals and invertebrates, while an excess of free iodine can cause stress and necrosis.

Concentration Benchmarks

Natural seawater contains approximately 0.06 mg/L of total iodine, primarily in the form of iodide. In reef aquariums, an iodide concentration between 0.06 and 0.08 mg/L is generally recommended.
