Anti-Phosphates
The Anti-Phosphates category includes filtering media and protocols designed to effectively eliminate dissolved phosphates (PO₄³⁻) to prevent algae proliferation and preserve the coloration and growth of corals.
Operating Principles
- Selective resins: ion exchange resin media (Phos 0.04, PowerPhos) that capture phosphate ions through chemical adsorption.
- Fibers and beads: beads or fibers impregnated with metallic compounds (aluminum, ferric) to trap phosphates via precipitation.
- Inline filtration: installation in an external filter or dedicated reactor to maximize water/media contact.

- Rapid reduction of PO₄³⁻: measurable reduction in 24–48 hours.
- Maintaining clear water: prevention of algae and cyanobacteria blooms.
- Long-lasting action: stable media that can treat for several weeks to several months depending on the load.
- Ease of use: simple insertion into a reactor or filter basket, easy regeneration or replacement.
Usage Recommendations
- Install 50–100 g of resin (Phos 0.04) per 100 L of volume in a reactor or laminar flow basket.
- Circulate water at a moderate flow rate (5–10 times the tank volume per hour) to maximize contact.
- Check the PO₄³⁻ level every 2–3 days and replace or regenerate the media as soon as the adsorption capacity decreases (generally 3–6 weeks depending on the load).
- Use a precise PO₄³⁻ test (AquaHomeTest PO₄) to continuously monitor effectiveness.
- After media change or regeneration, rinse slightly with osmosis water to remove dust before activation.
