Reef sand
Reef Sand for Marine Aquarium
Reef sand became a key element of marine aquariums from the 1980s, with the development of natural methods inspired by tropical lagoons. The introduction of the Jaubert and Berlin systems strengthened its role in the biological stability of reef tanks.
Typically composed of natural aragonite, reef sand helps maintain pH due to its buffering capacity and offers a large surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria. Depending on its grain size, it also promotes microfaunal life and contributes to the balance of the nitrogen cycle.
Beyond its biological role, reef sand provides an aesthetic finish that closely resembles natural reefs. Carefully chosen and suited to the volume of the aquarium, it forms an essential base for a stable, functional, and visually harmonious marine aquarium.
